Hierarchy is being challenged in most workplaces these days.
Reality and everyday life have become extremely complex. Changing working conditions, new technologies and skill sets, AI (artificial intelligence), challenges to privilege, demands for diversity, different rules for communication and behavior, hybrid work and the desire for freelancing, younger generations’ expectations for good leadership and meaningful work, parents’ and seniors’ demands for flexibility and commitment, a wellbeing crisis, a counter-movement back to traditional approaches, increased societal speed and acceleration, and not least an uncertain global situation—all call for new ways of leading and organizing work.
But it puts pressure on workflows, challenges roles, and creates uncertainty about individual responsibilities—who really holds the power? All of this can generate both insecurity and resistance within collaboration and community, but it also opens up new possibilities.
